Chana Dal Payasam

Daals are very popular dishes in India. Many kinds of mouthwatering dishes are made using dals. Among the popular Indian dishes made using dals, chana dal payasam is very popular for its delicious taste. This mouthwatering Indian food is also highly nutritious and very easily digestible. Chana dal payasam can be prepared very easily in an ordinary kitchen. Chana dal payasam is generally popular in south India. This food is generally cooked on the auspicious occasions like marriage and birthday. This is also offered to the gods and goddesses as an offering at the time of worship.


Chana dal payasam is best prepared in microwave oven. It can also be prepared on the conventional oven. The necessary ingredients for making chana dal payasam can be obtained very easily from the market. The necessary ingredients of chana dal payasam include the following

  • Cashewnuts 5 pieces
  • Chopped coconut 2 tablespoons
  • Crushed cardamoms 5 pieces
  • Jaggery 1 cup
  • Clarified butter (Ghee) 4 tablespoons
  • Grated coconut ( khopra/ narial) 1 cup
  • ½ cup split Bengal gram ( Chana Dal)


Process of making chana dal payasam.

At first the grams are to be washed and soaked properly. The coconut pieces are to be fried by ghee until these turn brown in color. Cashew nuts are to fried in the same ghee at a very low flame until these become golden brown in color. Next work is to extract coconut milk by soaking the grated coconut in a cup half full of water. Then pass the mixture through a strainer. Boil the grams in a sauteuse with sufficient water. Jaggery and coconut milk are to added with the well boiled grams. This mixture is to be cooked until it becomes medium thick. The remaining ghee and the cardamom are to be mixed throughly with the mixture. Now the chana dal payasam is ready to be served garnished with the fried coconut pieces and cashew nuts.
